Brooklin's linocut of Medusa showed all the signs of a student with a creative vision and a professional attitude, which got my attention as well as the other jurors. The piece is graphically compelling, appearing to show a modern interpretation of the myth of Medusa, with a young female figure who feels contemporary, perhaps a high school student!
The drawing is excellent as is her use of an analogous color scheme, with green being dominant, yet somehow made inviting with warm tones of gold added into the printed layers. Her use of positive/negative space is harmonious, while the space above the figure clearly relates to the subject and pulls our attention back to her portrait. She used a range of values, and shows a good understanding of how pattern can enhance a subject. I found myself drawn back to study the work, and was also impressed by the framing/matting presentation, something which clearly enhanced the print and added to its impact on the viewer.
I look forward to how this young student develops as an artist!
