Description:
Adaptation is the rare painting that carries its own biography. Morgan Johnson began this piece in 2006 and finished it in 2020 — fourteen years of returning, reconsidering, and revising as new information arrived. The result is dense and restless: a dark ground of deep black, burnt orange, and churning earth tones, with Fractionalist cells that abandon any regular grid in favor of something more organic and pressured. At the center, a cluster of white forms pushes up through the surrounding darkness with just enough structural suggestion — bone-like, branching, almost anatomical — that the eye keeps trying to name what it sees and keeps failing. That failure is intentional. "An evolving idea across years," Johnson describes it, "refining depiction based on new or different information." This is a painting that refuses to arrive at a final answer, because the Adaptation Series never promised one. It promised the process instead — and the process took fourteen years to look like this.
