Description:
Deanna Schuerbeke painted Blossoming on a bright spring day in Oregon — rhododendrons in bloom, the trees carrying that particular electric green that only arrives for a few weeks each year. "The feeling you get," she says, "when good things begin to reveal themselves, and the world feels light, and anything seems possible." Of all her paintings, this one most completely abandons the primary palette she typically works in. There is no red here, no bold yellow, no assertive cobalt. Instead: pinks, lavender, mellow chartreuse, soft sage, the particular blue-green of new leaves in filtered light. The palette itself is the season.

What the eye does in this painting is unlike anything in Schuerbeke's studio. It circles. Soft aqua and teal brushstrokes in the center pull the gaze into a gentle spiral — and as it follows those curves, something extraordinary happens: the motion resolves first into the shape of a single petal, then expands outward until the entire canvas reads as a single blossom seen from directly above, the dark passages of the upper left receding as soft shadow beneath the petals rather than asserting as bold accent. The black is present but buried — a lower layer that gives the softer colors something to glow against without competing for attention.

Blossoming is the gentlest painting in Deanna Schuerbeke's body of work, and the most quietly joyful. It does not announce itself. It opens — gradually, in spirals, the way a flower does — and by the time you realize what has happened, you are already inside it.
