Dispersal of Moonlight earns its reveal slowly. The first reading is pure abstraction — a tall, narrow canvas covered in crystalline Fractionalist planes, the geometric cells here sharper and more angular than usual, catching cool blues, silver-grays, and warm flashes of orange and gold the way cut glass catches light from multiple directions at once. The Silver Discoveries Series marked Johnson's first use of metallic paint, and the effect here is unmistakable: the surface shimmers, shifts, refuses to stay still. Then the figure appears. A man, seen from behind, seated or turned slightly away — his form assembled entirely from the same fractured planes as everything surrounding him, so that he seems less discovered than gradually admitted. "Light lands on a figure before the moon," Johnson writes, and once you've found him you can't unfind him. What felt like pure formal geometry a moment ago now feels like an intrusion — intimate, quiet, and just slightly not meant for you.
