"Everything is still moving, or maybe even floating," Deanna Schuerbeke says of Drift, "but at a nice, unhurried pace." She describes this as a rare state for her — the deliberate intention to slow down, be present, be light — and the painting carries that quality so completely that it changes the way you move through it. This is not a painting you enter from the top. The eye settles at the bottom first, drawn by the soft pooling of cream and sage at the lower edge, then rises slowly — unhurried, exactly as she intended.

What the eye finds as it moves upward is a canvas that refuses to resolve. A line begins and dissolves into nothing. A passage of warm coral softens at its edges until it becomes indistinguishable from the peach ground beneath it. Loose floral suggestions — the gold loop at the upper left, the green and teal curves at center — hint at form without committing to it. At the top edge, brushstrokes lead the eye clean off the canvas, releasing it softly into open air rather than returning it inward. There are no anchors here, no corner marks holding the composition contained. Everything is permitted to drift.

The palette does the same work as the mark-making: cream, blush, soft teal, and muted sage — colors that lean toward each other rather than insisting on their own separateness. Even the moments of higher intensity, the red at upper left, the yellow at center right, arrive softened, as if seen through gauze. Drift is the quietest painting in Deanna Schuerbeke's studio. It is also, in its own unhurried way, one of the most complete.
