Description:
"No reaching, not wanting," Deanna Schuerbeke says of Enough. "Just this, and it's plenty." She describes it as a reminder she returns to again and again — the quieter, more contemplative counterpart to her more turbulent work. Where her other paintings surge and press and search, this one simply settles. Walking into it feels like walking into a warm, muted hug.
The technical choices are the emotional argument. Creams and soft peaches are washed and melded together in light, translucent layers that build a ground of extraordinary fullness — not empty, not sparse, but quietly complete. Beneath those washes, excitement does exist: ochre and yellow passages, swirling individual brushstrokes, pops of green and coral that carry real energy. But they sit under the pale washes rather than on top of them, present but softened, the way ambient sound softens inside a warm room. A diagonal of lighter value crosses the canvas from upper left to lower right — dynamic, suggesting movement — but the movement feels external, happening somewhere beyond the self rather than within it. The dark mass at the right edge anchors without threatening, grounding the composition the way a closed door grounds a quiet room.
Enough does not ask you to feel anything in particular. It simply surrounds you in a moment of contentment and holds you there — activity swirling at the edges, peace at the center — until you remember that this, exactly this, is plenty.
