This piece changes character depending on how far back you stand. Up close, the mountains and water dissolve into soft, feathery texture — fractured marks, scratched lines, a surface that feels almost weightless. Step back, and that same texture resolves into something far more turbulent: dark, mysterious massing in the rock and reflected water, a sense of unease building at the edges without ever tipping into outright dread. It's a fitting effect for the subject. Pam Haunschild calls king tides "a harbinger of sea level change and flooding that will likely occur with the warming of the oceans" — and this painting holds that same quiet duality, beautiful and unsettled at once, depending on how closely you're willing to look.
