Description:

After the density of some of Johnson's more turbulent work, Mechanism of Rotation breathes. The subject is a sunset — the sun itself positioned just left of center, a warm orb pressing through deep violet-blue clouds while gold and amber light spills across the water below in long horizontal bands. It is among the most universally beloved of subjects, and Johnson knows it. From the Immersive Series — a body of work exploring what pulls the mind into an idea — he describes combining "visual rotation, bright colors and a favorite subject to pull in the viewer." What elevates this beyond a sunset painting is the Fractionalist overlay: the geometric planes radiate outward from the sun itself, as if the light is the source not just of warmth but of the painting's entire organizational logic. The composition draws the eye inward toward the sun while the light it generates pushes back outward, so that standing before this piece produces the distinct sensation of a shoreline at dusk: being pulled toward something and receiving it at the same time, soaking in the last warmth the day has to offer before it goes.
