Description:
Neighborhood is Morgan Johnson's most chromatic painting — and perhaps his most optimistic. The canvas is built entirely from rectangular and angular forms in hot pink, acid yellow, cobalt, orange, teal, and lavender, stacked and overlapping at angles that suggest, without literally depicting, the compressed geometry of urban density: rooflines, facades, lots pressed against lots. There is no single street here, no address, no landmark. From the Structure Series, Johnson's premise is that "color as the form defining housing and cultural differences, across time, and yet seldom static" — and the painting makes that argument visually by refusing to let any color dominate or any block settle into permanence. Every shape pushes against its neighbor. No two adjacent forms agree. The result is a neighborhood in the truest sense — not a place of uniformity but a living compression of difference, each distinct presence insisting on its own hue while contributing, whether it intends to or not, to something that only exists because of all the others. It is loud, unresolved, and entirely alive. Exactly like a neighborhood.
