Description:
There is something disarming about Red Peddle — and that disarmament is entirely the point. This is the largest work in the current Nicart selection, and Morgan Johnson fills all 40×30" of it with a bicycle so casually rendered, so warmly familiar in its tilted, leaning posture and its red pedals catching the afternoon light, that it triggers something almost involuntary: a summer afternoon, a screen door, a bike dropped against a fence while you ran inside for lunch. That nostalgia is not an accident. It is the mechanism. Johnson paints this from the Emanation Series with a deliberate thesis — China's ability to flood global markets with affordable bicycles as a Trojan horse for economic capture. The bicycle worked because it was universal and innocent, because everyone already had a memory of one. "The economy was captured," Johnson notes plainly. The painting understands exactly how: not through force, but through something that felt like childhood. The most effective strategies rarely announce themselves.
