Deanna Schuerbeke hikes to think. "This is what I like to do to clear my head and feel like myself," she says — warm colors winding through the canvas like the many trails she has walked on summer evenings, no particular destination, no solution required. Secret Paths is that walk translated directly into paint: the color, the wandering, the particular quality of mind that arrives only when the body is moving through something larger than itself.

The eye finds the path immediately — individual meandering brushstrokes in burgundy, rust, and warm coral that begin at the center of the canvas and wind diagonally upward toward the upper right, gradual and unhurried, the way a trail climbs a gentle slope rather than a steep one. These lines are doing two things at once: they are the physical path underfoot and the wandering thoughts that accompany it, both moving in the same direction, neither in any particular hurry. The left side of the canvas opens into a field of soft gray — not the rawness of uncovered canvas but something warmer and more intentional, a breathing space, a place where the mind can rest without needing to land anywhere. Surrounding it all, the color presses in: olive, teal, magenta, cobalt, deep burgundy — the saturated world of a summer landscape seen peripherally when the mind has finally let go of its agenda.

Secret Paths does not resolve into anything more specific than this: the quiet that arrives when you stop looking for it. The peace that turns out to have been there the whole time, waiting along the trail.
