Description:
Two nests rest quietly in the background here, eggs settled and shadowed, easy to miss on a first pass. The real story is in the foreground, where a third nest catches what reads like direct, filtered sunlight — eggs rendered in sharp, almost luminous highlights against branches that fade from crisp detail into soft, atmospheric distance the further back they recede. How Pam Haunschild achieved that particular depth — whether through resist techniques, texture pressed into the paint, or careful layering of light against a deliberately limited palette — isn't immediately obvious, and that's part of what makes the piece reward a longer look. "Working to show a sheltered nest surrounded by foliage casting shadows on the eggs," she says, restricting her palette intentionally so nothing competes with the central idea: shelter, and what it means to the smallest, most vulnerable things waiting inside it.
