Description:

There's a window of about three minutes after the sun drops below the water when the light does something it never quite manages at any other time of day — it spreads outward from the horizon in bands, catches the undersides of clouds in gold and orange, and turns the ocean into a mirror that holds all of it at once. Pam Haunschild set out to capture exactly that window. "This piece is my attempt to capture the light at the last moment when the sun has just gone down," she says, "and light is reflecting on the water and through the branches of a shore pine." The tree at left pulls the eye down and anchors the composition in something rooted and earthbound — a counterweight to all that radiance dissolving into the sea.
