Artist: Pam Haunschild
Format: Acrylic on board, black wood float frame
Dimensions: 11" x 14" x 2"
Description:
A web of bare branches fills nearly the entire frame here, rendered in a flattened, almost graphic style — until the color breaks the illusion. Pam Haunschild washes the scene in the blown-out purples and blues of an overexposed photograph, and that light does something the flat technique alone couldn't: it gives the branches a sudden sense of depth and atmosphere, as if the whole painting were caught in the act of becoming three-dimensional. Below, color bleeds straight down to the bottom edge of the board — a gesture that reads instinctively as roots, anchoring the composition to the ground. A single wren perches mid-branch, calling out into the twilight. Birds belong to the air, not the earth, and there's something quietly resonant in watching this one sit still within a painting that feels grounded — both of them, perhaps, just waiting for the right moment to lift off.
