There is a moment in the making of a painting when the artist stops directing it and starts listening to it. Unbound is what that moment looks like from the inside. Schuerbeke describes holding tightly to an idea, then choosing to release it — and watching something lighter and more alive rise in its place. The canvas is the record of that release.

The painting operates on two simultaneous mark-making languages. The first is the field itself — overlapping passages of gold, teal, terracotta, magenta, and soft violet built from controlled back-and-forth strokes, their edges intentionally blurred, each form defined by color alone rather than any line that contains it. Shapes present but unwilling to harden into permanence. The second language runs over the top: singular, continuous linear marks in rust and black, drawn in one unbroken gesture that begins suggesting a shape — a square, an angle — and then refuses to close. The line trails off, breaks away, declines to become a boundary. Four of these marks anchor the corners of the canvas, keeping the eye contained within the field, leading it in a continuous path rather than letting it scatter or escape.
